Passion
Madeleine Johnson

As a student at Brigham Young University Idaho, you are surrounded by several different personalities. That is one of my favorite things about the campus. There are so many different people interested in different passions that are all around the board. Everyone has some sort of passion, so I decided to go find it.

This is Chase. I found Chase while I was walking through the snow building. I just happened to have my camera. His organ playing, echoed throughout the entire building. I was immediately drawn to it. Chase did not say much. His music said what he was trying to say. He is passionate. He is talented. He works. He practices. He knows that he has potential. Again, this is Chase. He plays the organ.

This is Matthew. Matthew and I have been singing together for months now. Matthew has a God given talent. Matthew plays the guitar. He has the ability to sit down anywhere, look up, chords, and play any song, close to perfectly in minutes. Matthew saw the images from earlier in the semester and immediately wanted some of his own. He is talented. He is passionate. He loves to share his talent. This is Matthew. He plays guitar.

This is Caroline. Caroline is an artist. Caroline is talented. Passionate is an understatement to describe Caroline. Caroline began drawing in middle school, and slowing progressed. Caroline loves to share her talent with others, by creating pieces that others will hold near their heart. This is Caroline. Caroline is an artist.

This is me, Madeleine. I'm passionate about the sky. I'm a writer. I'm an astrophotographer. I'm going to have to keep this surface level, due to where my mind tends to go, when I think of the extraterrestrial part of this world. I found my passion a few years ago. There is something about being part of a bigger picture that puts me very much at ease. I will share a another small one of my passions, in the form of writing. I'm Madeleine. I'm passionate about the stars.

"The Girl with the Star Pictures"

Madeleine Johnson

I’m often referred to as “the girl with the star pictures” on campus. Sometimes I’m flattered. Many people find that as a way to talk to me. They always ask, “I want to go take star pictures with you!” I’m very “weird” when it comes to showing people this form of art. I show those who have showed me that they have a passion for the sky, and they are just as curious about the unknown. However, stargazing is a time with myself that I really cherish. Often times, when people will come along, I’ll usually stay to the side, keep to myself, take a few images, then sit alone looking up. When I look at the sky, my mind develops an uncontrollable infatuation with the mysteries and unanswered questions it holds. I don’t like a lot of people to see that side of me. My thoughts tend to stray to the terrestrial parts of this universe. The “how come”, “what if”, and especially the “what else”. Us as beings, are so small and insignificant. What else is out there? As you lay there, so many things start to appear when you really start to focus on what is in front of you. You forget about the assignment, the boy, the sickness, the now. You focus on the falling star to your left that came out of nowhere, but you’re so ecstatic that you got to witness it. Then another. And another. You see colours. Blues. Purples. Reds. Yellows. Greens. What does each little grain-sized dot mean? I guess that is what makes it so fascinating to me. I came across some images published by NASA. I was mesmerized. I could not stop going from picture to picture. As I sat there pondering over each image that appeared to the screen, I soon found myself starting to get lost in my own brain, again. Then the thought came to me. “If someone gave me the opportunity to go to space, but said, ‘there is a 90% chance you would die up there. However, you would get there and you could take your camera. People would be able to see your pictures’ I would do it, No doubt.” I believe that everyone played a part in the creation of the earth. I believe that I had a hand in the creation of the night sky. I admire my creation every night.
